Second Life

January 4, 2008 · No Comments

The concept of second life is quite out there. but at this stage, the software seems a bit limiting.  Im sure that someone is working hard to address the issues about constant changes to versions and firewall access and long download times.

Until these things are addressed, or Australia’s network improves exponentially and ubiquitously very soon, applications in education, and in the Library seem limited.  But it’s simply a case of watch this space, as existing proprietary leaming management systems are also limited, and they don’t have the pressure of millions of people wanting them to improve!

Podcasts

I’ve just started learning Spanish and need all the help i can find! I used Podcast Alley to locate Coffee Break Spanish - and now have access to 50 podcasts for introductory Spanish… how cool is that!

Over the holidays, a friend was playing mp3 files through his car radio from a usb stick. Better than an mp3 player he said. With 1.5 hours of driving each day, I could see the possibilities - get more of the things I need to read for work as podcasts, and listen as I drive. Not to mention, lots of my fav music, and now 50 Spanish lessons… So, now it’s off to Dick Smiths to get another toy.

YouTube

With thoughts of visiting out of the way places, the Distant Libraries of the World tubes were quite interesting to see - better than just a photo or two buried in a website or a blog somewhere.

YouTube is great for bringing the world to the world.

One thing about library tubes, they tend to be the same old thing.  We’re looking forward to our Deakin vodcast for 2008 - it’s due to be released for Week Zero in Feb.  Lots of students and academics have been involved to create the theme, concepts, images, sound.   Exciting 2.0 worlds…

Wikis

I posted my surrogate pet to our PetsPage some time ago - but didn’t have the instructions to re-size in Fireworks.  Thanks for these details Kat, and for the guide to image size and file type for websites - useful stuff as we use wikis more and more in our daily work.  Cheers!

Library2.0

January 4, 2008 · No Comments

I checked out one of the suggested Resources : Library 2.0 - an academic’s perspective and came across an interesting concept - social scholarship - by Laura Cohen This involves a researcher in sharing the research process such as the early stages of developing the topic, collaborating with ’soft peer review’ - more like an academic conversation with colleagues, and sharing useful resources and sites. Laura also pinpointed mobile technologies as important near-future factor, suggesting library websites offer mobile options.

Library 2.0 can be more than librarians enabling multi-way communication between users, collections, library services and library staff.
We could also take up the challenge of the harder edge (thanks Terry) and see how the more technical aspects of 2.0 could help us provide push technologies that support new forms of scholarship and the increasing mobility of communications. Kindle - Amazon’s wireless eREADER - is a start. True personalisation is another.

del.icio.us

January 4, 2008 · No Comments

This is one I’ve been using for ages - thanks to Kat for the early intro.

Once you’ve tagged a site, it’s then so easy to locate in del.icio.us again, and being able to share good sites so easily with other people, and to check out what others have tagged, just makes it even more interesting.

iGoogle

It’s all so simple - and there’s endless options to choose from.

I’ve chosen to stick with my Yahoo email account - I like the idea of not putting everything in one basket, however, the functionalities - multiple multiples - that Google offers, sure makes it tempting to go with just one provider…

Google Books

I checked out a book that a friend is trying to hunt down - wsomething from childhood - found a possible title in Libraries Australia - this was so good, having the search done automatically and in the most ‘logical’ catalogue.

I then searched Library2.0 and found an interesting compilation of Stephen Abram’s thoughts on leadership in libraries into the future.  Will be following up this one too!

Google Docs n Sheets

Now I understand the M/S takeover talk - GD really does what you need.

Real time sharing of docs has so much potential for so much of our work - reports, papers, submissions, etc. And great for support to our Advisory and Working groups — not to mention annual and monthly strat and op plans….

Immediate use will be co-preparing a conference presentation and an induction program…

Spreadsheets also will be fun - probably more for home-stuff

Another great efficiency tool. I love it!

Google Maps

January 4, 2008 · No Comments

This has to be the best thing! My brother is living in San Francisco, and he introduced me to Google Maps to ’see’ his street and house and surrounds. It was fab, and I did the usual checking out my home, friends places, etc.

What I hadn’t used GM for was route-finding. It’s great! Am planning a couple of weekend trips, and GM not only shows a possible route, but gives distance and time. I just checked it for travelling from my home to Deakin Waterfront — and it’s suggested route is nothing like the one I take — will check it out soon, as hurtling along on the Western ring road is sometimes a challenge, first up in the day.

Will be heading to GM far more often now!
